Think I’ve cracked the knot thing, Google pe-knot
January 11th, 2012 at 8:17 am
Ha ha, cheers Gordy. My knots are nothing to write home about! My uni knot is grand, but dont ask me to tie a rapala!! Waterproof glue is the best invention ever!!
January 8th, 2012 at 5:09 pm
Thank you to the Hokitika chartered club for a great Perch fishing day, the little buggers are harder to catch than first thought. The grandson loved his prize. A great family event on a beautiful West Coast day for all. Yes I caught one but sure tried to catch more with no luck. Need to refine my perch skills.
January 7th, 2012 at 11:05 pm
Heading to Lake Kaniere Sunday morning for Perch contest with grandson to give some inter club support and catch a few of those prickly perch.

Glad to help Gareth, There are a couple of shops here that will be more than happy to help you out with gear or even a bit of local knowledge, The local Smith city store is always helpful and will put you onto the right gear, Just don’t let him tie your knots lol

Great day at Westport on the 27th. Flat seas, clear water (you could see the bottom from 10m) sunny skies but not too many fish. That is until you came back through the Buller River mouth…. boy were the kahawai going off! I hope that it is something like this when the King Kahawai competition takes place in the Grey River on 19 February 2012.
January 2nd, 2012 at 10:35 am
Gordy, thanks for the tips! Just been on Google Earth, so excited seeing how close the bridge is to town! I think that the wife is happier as she can let me go fishing knowing that I wont get lost!! We are travelling round the south island in a camper( I will pull over and let everyone past on the roads!) so once we get to Christchurch, I will get myself some gear and go looking for good spots to fish. Cheers again and look forward to seeing you all soon.
January 1st, 2012 at 3:16 pm
Hi Gareth
The river is fishing well for kahawai at the moment, the hot spot looks to be just below the Cobden bridge, If you want to travel 1/2 an hour inland to lake Brunner the Trout will be sure to keep you entertained.
Surfcasting also seems to be producing at the moment so you should be able to get into some fine fishing along your travels.
You never know your luck, maybe a GFC member will tuck you under their wing if they are heading out.

Hello everyone. My wife and I are coming over from Ireland in a few weeks time and I am keen to try out a spot of fishing! I have already got some boat time sorted with a family friend in the north. I was wondering if there were any good shore marks around Greymouth. According to our schedule(!) we will only really have an a day and a bit in Greymouth and I know that the missus will not be keen to take the whole day off to go fishing (what is wrong with her?!!). So if I could get a few hours off a pier, beach etc I will be happy enough. Go raibh maith agat agus adh mor (Thank you and good luck in Irish!)

Came back over the bar yesterday with Gary and his Stabi in hot pursuit and there was a small craft drifting down the Grey by the Blaketown Rugby Clubrooms. Another boat had just pulled up by them to offer help, Popped over to them to offer a tow and low and behold, Three large guys in it that looked like the band members from Kiss, with no more than 6 inches of freeboard in an 8 foot boat, no lifejackets and each holding a Beer. Turns out the recoil starter on their chinese outboard had stopped recoiling. At least their feet would have been nice and dry in their gumboots.

It’s all good down this way Leigh.
King Kahawai is about to kick off and it’s looking like a cracker, We have some great sponsors that have come on board.
Four club boats popped up to Westport the other day to a pretty mixed bag of species, A few cod were taken along with usual crays and some of the largest kahawai workups we have ever seen, There has been some great snapper being caught off Greymouth as well so lets hope that continues.
The Albacore competition will go into full swing as soon as the little rockets turn up, Anyway, hope your Christmas went well and the new year is a cracker.

Hope all members had an enjoyable Christmas and are gearing up ready for some good fishing in the New Year.
Fishing has been very consistent here in the Bay, with good numbers and size for Blue Cod throughout the winter and now the Snapper are back in the Bay.
The Albacore were in the Bay in large quantities last summer, so we are looking forward to targeting them again. How’s the Albacore competition looking for you guys this summer??
How’s the fishing club going down there, we haven’t had any newsletters or minutes of the meetings so it’s a bit hard to stay active from a distance. It would be good to know what we can still do to suppport competitions etc.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:09 pm
Merry Christmas to you all.
A couple of boats are heading up to westport tomorrow for some fish slaying.
Anyone wishing to tag along is very welcome. we will be leaving Greymouth around 5am so gas up the boat tonight if your an early bird..

Always a great get together for members up on the farm. Heard that Cheryl put the boy’s to shame on the golf course. Max has become our new ‘Bow Hunter’ if we can find all the arrows. Seasonal Challenge Lake Brunner
On Sunday morning a few brave soles ventured out on Lake Brunner with the view of bringing home the big one and taking out the trophy. Some nice fish made there way back to the clubrooms for the weigh in.
The heaveist fish was 2.060 kgs landed by Ivan, well done that man.
October 1st, 2011 at 4:59 pm
Great start for opening day with a Rainbow and brown trout from up the ‘cow. Not too sure about Sunday on the Lake, weather not looking to good.
September 27th, 2011 at 6:43 am
Take Mondays off and go fishing! Only three boats on lake. Been a long time coming but Gary and I did just that. Trout! I haven’t enjoyed a day off work fishing in years. Between motor and oars we fished between the shallow’s, the depths, we stalked, caught and released heaps, spotted dozens.(I now believe Gary when he tell’s the boy’s how many trout be spotted) Totally enjoyable day. Now I’ve got the bug again, I’m off.
September 23rd, 2011 at 11:07 pm
Opening Challenge at lake brunner on Sunday the 2nd of October from first light, weigh in back at the clubrooms 3-30pm followed by a BBQ. All fish to be gutted and gilled.
Limit your catch don’t catch your limit
September 18th, 2011 at 6:39 pm
Had a great day up at lake brunner today. Mark took his boat and we launched at the new ramp at Moana, headed off round to the left in front of the yatch club. Hooked up with the first of five fish at 8-30 on a tas devil this was released back into the lake and we continued around past the crooked river. From there we headed up to the top of the lake were we came across Margeret Adams, she had kayaked across from the Mitchells side to fish the shallows.
Lots of fish in the lake at present and they are in good condition.

July 9th, 2011 at 11:40 pm
What a great effort from the team selling raffles at New World today, All the prizes looked excellent and the trailer load of wood was brilliant. (thanks Jim)
Looks like there were quite a few tickets sold and even had a couple of people asking about joining the club.
Great stuff.
July 4th, 2011 at 11:21 pm
Thank you Cheryl and Jim for a great day on the farm with club members splitting firewood for the clubs raffle at New World on Saturday 9th July, this has to be the best load of wood that a $2.00 raffle will buy. Contact Andrew or Garry if you want ticket but can’t get in to buy one. 2nd and 3rd prizes are great also.
June 11th, 2011 at 8:52 am
Went up to Lake Brunner last sunday with Mark just to get the boat wet, we trolled around for a while and caught three very nice brown trout all in excellent condition the biggest being 6 1/2 pound (Mark’s of course).

March 24th, 2011 at 9:08 pm
Pohara - another great Greymouth Fishing Club trip. Great hospitality (thanks Leigh and Michelle), great company and the opportunity to catch a few fish. Nothing very big but I am looking forward to enjoying some snapper meals over the next few weeks.
Thanks to everyone involved, particularly the birthday girl for getting it all organised. Roll on the next fishing adventure!
March 13th, 2011 at 7:40 pm
Popped out over the Bar today as the Kahawai didnt want to play with us in the river, Huge Cuda workups everywhere getting into the krill and I have never seen so many Sharks. Some big ones out there too. No Tuna to be seen.
February 20th, 2011 at 6:43 pm

What a great get together for GFC Christmas BBQ at on Saturday, I wish all members the best and trust you will have plenty of days fishing over the Christmas break
November 15th, 2010 at 7:25 pm
Now I can see why people are so impressed with Okiwi Bay. Blue Cod, trevally, snapper, tarakihi, scallops and oysters along with the spotty dogfish, barracuda, kawahai and carpet sharks. Nothing too big but a lot of fun.
Thanks to all fishing club members who went, especially Sharron and Trev for organising it and Jim and Cheryl for their company on the water.
November 8th, 2010 at 9:07 pm
Great trip to Okiwi Bay plenty of Blue Cod and Scallops, good company good fun,
thanks team
November 1st, 2010 at 9:29 pm
That was a good trip, Thanks for jacking it up TaS. Some good fish were caught but that salmon was a beauty. I have a couple of photos that I will put up tomorrow.
October 31st, 2010 at 8:22 pm
I’m thinking maybe I should hand the name of my boat over to Tim after his fine catch in Westport today.
September 26th, 2010 at 12:31 pm

Hopefully a good season ahead for those into the freshwater fishing.
July 23rd, 2010 at 9:27 pm
Good weekend at Okiwi Bay. Great to see that the weather didn’t put a damper on it. Glad to see the first timers to Okiwi liked the place as well as it really is a great place to play. Fishing was slower than usual but that is fishing. The scallops did however taste good. Must be a club record for the heaviest Thresher Shark on soft plastic!
July 22nd, 2010 at 3:43 pm
had a fun couple of days at Okiwi Bay, The place we stayed was excellent value and the company was good (even the snorers). The fish weren’t big but we got enough for a few feeds , the scollops where a bit on the small size but there again enough for a taste. Thanks to Sharon And Tas for organising the trip big pat on the back to both. Looks loike we may have a new member joining now that Jill out fished Ivan (know now why he’s never brought her along on a fishing trip in the past). WEN THE NEXT ONE!!!!!!!!
July 22nd, 2010 at 9:49 am
Great trip to Okiwi Bay, good company, fishing erratic but some good fish still caught, weather great only one day wet but that didn’t stop the keen fishers from getting out there to catch a feed, Garry Sharland flew the top catch fish flag the first day then Leigh Kelly took it over and retained it for the remainder of the trip (top boat flag has not been returned to the club) thanks to all for the great time.
July 21st, 2010 at 11:51 am
Great trip to Okiwi Bay. Good variety of fish caught without anything particularly big - and heaps of small blue cod.
Thanks to Sharron for getting it all organised and everyone else who went for providing such good company.
May 31st, 2010 at 10:31 am
We went out yesterday and sea was good and flat in close, it was quite lumpy further out. We got a gurnard. plenty of dogs, grey boys and barracudas.
April 20th, 2010 at 6:20 pm
Thanks Bryan, it was a great day would have been nice to see more fish caught but them the breaks, it sours the day to know that there are dishonest (freedom campers) people out there ready to thieve from a boat left unattended for a matter of 15 minutes or so and within sight of all club members.
Trev
April 19th, 2010 at 10:02 pm
Well done Trev for showing us all (by deed) how to catch fish at Lake Ianthe on the 18th. Two brown trout and one salmon, also making up 100% of all the fish caught from five boats fishing, is serious head swell material. A nice day with good company!
April 7th, 2010 at 3:14 pm
Friday 30th April the main Trout season comes to a halt (of course you can fish certain other waters over the winter) but lets do a season ender say at Ianthe before then - a Sunday would be good - 11th 18th or 25th ….or all three!!!! What yuh reckon? Ive
February 6th, 2010 at 7:30 pm
Well this is just bragging really today we went out that big wide ocean thats on our doorstep to see if we could catch a tuna or two as the the Wildcat charters Tuna Madness is under way, we had a great start as we now have 11 tuna weights on our weigh chart, come on all you fishers get out and catch a tuna or two to make this competition a cracker, if you don’t want to catch a Tuna then catch a Salmon as there is the sizzling salmon competition on as well,
CHECK OUT THE COMPETITION PAGE UNDER CLUB INFO.
February 2nd, 2010 at 9:19 pm
Yeah i think it was a great day had by all, So good 2 c kids with whopping great smiles , and fish 2 match
February 1st, 2010 at 9:45 pm
Thanks to everyone involved in organising a great King Kawahai competiton. Heaps of happy smiling faces at the end was a tribute to your hard work and a real measure of its success. To everyone who entered, I hope you give thought to joining this family friendly club and be sure to support all the sponsors who contributed such a lot in these tough times.
Great photo in the Grey Star of Ive showing Trev just how friendly we can be.
Now the weather is settled, roll on Tuna Madness!
January 31st, 2010 at 5:16 pm
Congratulations to’Greymouth Fishing Club Inc.’ for a totally amazing King Kahawai competition held on the Grey River today in beautiful fine but windy conditions, Sunday 31st Jan. What a well organised and run competition. Truely a family fun day. The amount of donated prizes from both local and national businesses showed the support that this event has on the local calendar. To see the high number of children with parents and many taking away a spot prize is a credit to the fishing clubs hard work and sponsors. Not many West Coast competitons hand out prizes of $500 cash, kayak, fishing kits, Hooded gas BBQ and padio heater to list just a few.
See you again next year, keep up the good work.
January 27th, 2010 at 7:05 am
The Kahawi have finally arrrived in good numbers, there were ten boats on the river last night chasing them with people hooking up everywhere.
On monday morning the fish were coming right out of the water with swirls all around the boat it was great to see.
January 25th, 2010 at 4:06 pm
Heaps of solid kahawai in the river yesterday and with the forcasted fine weather for the next week it looks to be shaping up for a good one. One keen club member was even spotted on the river at 7:45 this morning scrapping it out. Some have got good jobs aye!
October 26th, 2009 at 10:19 am
Gave the surfcasting gear a splash of salt (as have been in hiding for almost three years) at the Serpentine for two and half hours on Sunday evening and caught two clean red cod and a nice kahawai. Was after the eleo’s but was just doing something different in my fishing scene. So if you have a couple of hours spare throw the line in the ditch from the beach, take a book, kids and have some fun.
October 19th, 2009 at 8:16 pm
I would like to echo Andrew’s thoughts - thanks Ivan and everyone else who made Sunday’s fishing trip on Lake Brunner a great success. Trevor summed it up well - if the sea is rough then I think the local lakes will see a lot more GFC members out trying their luck against the wily trout.
It was magic out on lake, with good company both on the water and back at the weigh-in. I hope we can all enjoy many more weekends like this one.
October 18th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
Thank you GFC and Ivan for making today’s fishing trip on Lake Brunner a fun and rewarding day. A total weird experience moving through early morning fog, even if I went around in circles till I got my bearings, (GSP, compass and map). Once that sun came up and burnt it off…wow what a asset we have on the West Coast.
July 13th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Kayak Division managed 2 wrestle from the ocean, a good feed of blue cod and a few teraki on sunday. roads were icey, but one of the team said the water was very warm when he done the turtle. always good 4 a laugh
July 9th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
Hey everyone, went fishing off westport last tuesday, had a great day weather was perfect and the sea was a lake, so very calm we caught 12 crayfish and 24 blue cod so all in all was a brilliant day heading out again tomorrow and hoping for a similar result fingers crossed.
June 2nd, 2009 at 6:49 pm
A great afternoon at the kids’ herring fishing. Lots of happy and excited kids and a real positive advertisement for the Greymouth Fishing Club. Thanks to all involved in its organisation.
May 24th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
The weather wasnt the best 4 the herring day but not a bad day 4 my grand daughter, she caught her first fish and got some chocalate ones in exchange. Very happy little girl. Thank YOU. GFC
